About McSpadden Dulcimers

Lynn McSpadden made his first dulcimer in 1962. While studying for the Seminary his roommate brought in a dulcimer and showed him how to play. Lynn was fascinated. He decided to make one for himself.

Friends began asking Lynn to make them a dulcimer. And that's how the McSpadden Mountain Dulcimers began. Lynn never dreamt his dulcimers would be sold by dealers all over the world!

Lynn, his father and his brother Larry developed designs and methods to allow making large numbers of dulcimers while maintaining excellent quality.

The McSpaddens sold the business to Jim and Betty Woods in 2001. The Woods sold the business to Tim Grothen in 2020.
Through the years variations to the basic style led to different models while still reflecting the quality and image of the McSpadden Mountain Dulcimer.

"Building lots of dulcimers doesn’t prove much but having those dulcimers played by satisfied customers does say we provide a quality hand-crafted instrument built to be enjoyed for a lifetime."

Many craftsmen have participated in the building of McSpadden dulcimers over the years. However, the rich traditions continue with craftsmen who have over 75 years combined experience building dulcimers. (Even Larry McSpadden, Lynn’s brother comes in from time to time to remind us how it's done!)

Since our first mountain dulcimer in 1962, we have developed the instruments and designs you will find on these pages.  We're proud to offer a professional quality dulcimer at an affordable price.
